TI FIJI CONCLUDES NICE CE OUTREACH TO FIJI'S YOUTHS

04/04/2011

After over two years of implementing civic education under the UNDP National Initiative on Civic Education (NICE) Project, TI Fiji's work has finally ended.

During this period, TI Fiji has been able to touch base with the grassroots and engage with rural dwellers
by taking to their doorsteps concepts on democracy, rule of law, good governance and human rights.

Under the NICE project, which started in 2008, TI Fiji was tasked with the responsibility of specifically taking CE to youths in the country's four divisions.

TI Fiji was abled to hold over 220 workshops around the country, reaching some 8660 citizens, most of whom were youths.

On a national scale, an estimated 68,000 people were reached in the nationwide CE exercise, using a curriculum developed entirely by local stakeholders, experts, CSOs and NGOs with guidance from the UNDP.

To be able to complete  a huge task reflects on commitment from all individuals and groups involved in the nationwide outreach, especially the immense contribution and dedication from TI Fiji and the support from Government in allowing the Fiji-wide campaign to continue without being affected by the Public Emergency Regulation.

"It is quite overhwhelming to end such a huge and historic exercise," TI Fiji Programme Officer, Unaisi Valenitabua said.

"We are proud and overwhelmed knowing that we have empowered our communities with the knowledge and skills necessary
for their participation in the country's development and democratic process."

NICE is a Government of Fiji programme directly executed by the UNDP with financial support of the European Union and the Government of New Zealand through the NZAID.
