ALAC's Northern Mobile Outreach

26/08/2011

Outreach session at Nagigi Village, Savusavu.

NORTHERN OUTREACH A SUCCESS
The TI Fiji Secretariat programmes team has just returned from a successful week-long ALAC mobile outreach in the northern division.

Similar to the outreach conducted in August, in the west of Fiji, the programme involved awareness sessions of TI Fiji and its programmes such the Advocacy and Legal Advice Centre, the Open Budget Initiative and the Youth Leadership, Advocacy and Civic Education World of Difference Programme, supported by the Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation.

The outreach team visited targeted communities in Nabouwalu and Kiobo in Bua, Korowiri and Vunimoli in Labasa and Nagigi and Waivunia in Savusavu.

The presentation on ALAC took a look at the free advisory services provided by TI Fiji for victims and witnesses of corruption. It also touched on the variety of cases dealt with by the ALAC and efforts made so far to create an awareness of the Centre among Fiji’s citizens.

The OBI presentation gave rural citizens a glimpse into the national budget processes and challenged them on their role in monitoring and ensuring transparency and accountability in budget design, enactment and implementation.

The WOD Youth presentation touched on the work youth movements are doing around the world in bringing about change in their societies and provided a challenge for Fiji youths to stand up, empower each other and start advocating for real difference in Fiji, for peace and stability of the future.

Based on feedback received from workshop participants, it can be deduced that more efforts are needed to bridge the information gap between urban and rural citizens. It is also apparent that because of access and infrastructure challenges, most rural dwellers miss out on vital information needed for their effective participation in development and decision-making.

Another round of outreach is planned for Tavua and Ra in upcoming weeks.

The northern community outreach was conducted from August 22 to 27.
