TI Fiji proposal to the Ministry of Youth & Sport
10/05/2012
TI Fiji recently presented a proposal to the Ministry of Youth & Sport on TI Fiji's experience and capability in delivering civic education workshops to youth. The context of TI Fiji's proposal was the consideration being given, by the national government, for the delivery of educational and training workshops for youth on the principles of democracy, youth rights and responsibilities in the lead up to the 2014 elections.
TI Fiji’s Programme Officer, Una Valenitabua, provided an overview of TI Fiji’s experience in delivering civic education training to youth, including:
- implementation partner for the UNDP’s NICE (National Initiative on Civic Education) programme, reaching over 8,500 citizens through more than 220 workshops (2008 – 2011)
- outreach activities across the Western and Northern Divisions, reaching 180 youth via workshops (2011)
- delivery of the LACE (Leadership, Advocacy and Civic Education) programme to women and youth (2009 – 2012)
- implementation of the new Youth Integrity Promotion (YIP) Programme and delivery of a Youth Integrity Survey (commencing in mid-2012)
Although details of the government’s education and training programme are still to be confirmed, TI Fiji appreciated the opportunity to deliver its proposal to the Ministry, represented by Permanent Secretary for Youth, Mr Joseva Sania, the Acting Director Youth & Sports, Mr William Naisara, and Youth Officers from within the Ministry.
