News from TI PNG on Anti Corruption Day activities

10/12/2012

More than 200 patriotic people were at Ela Beach on Friday 7 December 2012 to show that they love Papua New Guinea and made a a pledge to do all they could to stop corruption and promote good governance.

As part of the International Anti-Corruption Day activities, Transparency International PNG organized an aerial photo shoot of a giant spelling of the phrase “WE LOVE (in the shape of a heart) PNG” on the beach. International Anti-Corruption Day aims to raise public awareness of corruption and what people can do to fight it. The aerial photograph communicates the statement to all Papua New Guineans that if we truly loved our country we must do all we can to stop corruption and promote better living.

Transparency International PNG Board Secretary, Mrs Gail Edoni, in her speech at the event encouraged individuals to think seriously about the damaging effects of corruption and take courage to say “no” to it. Transparency International PNG is an anti corruption advocate offered the following ways of how individuals can fight corruption in their everyday lives:

  • By informing yourself about the rule of law and what the government has pledged to do to fight corruption. Being part of an informed citizenry is not only vital to a healthy democracy: it holds elected officials responsible for their actions.
  • By reporting incidents of corruption to the authorities. By coming forward, you not only stand against the corruption, you also stand up for your community. If you are a victim or witness of corruption, you can come to TIPNG’s Advocacy & Legal Advice Center to seek free legal advice.
  • By teaching children that corruption is unacceptable. Parents can teach their children the value of integrity. Integrity means that you are willing to do the right thing. You will stand by what you believe is right because you believe and know it to be the right thing. Educating our children while they are young will ensure that they grow up to be good citizens who will act with integrity.
  • By refusing to pay or accept bribes, facilitation fees or gifts. Rejecting and refusing to pay bribes sends a strong message not only to those who would attempt to solicit favors, but also to those working with them.
  • By telling elected leaders that fighting corruption should be an integral part of all development policies. Reminding those you put in office that they represent you, your community and your ideals.
  • By Parliament being open to communicate what they are doing and help citizens understand the role of Parliament.
  • By respecting and upholding the law to better PNG’s ranking on the TI Corruptions Perceptions Index 2012 of 150 out of 176.

TIPNG acknowledges the great support from Helifix Operations for the helicopter services, Digicel for sponsoring 200 red T-shirts, and all the patriotic citizens that took part in the event.
