TI Fiji welcomes registration of political parties

13/05/2013

TI Fiji has applauded the registration of three (3) political parties as a positive step toward freeing up the electoral process and holding truly democratic elections in September 2014.

The organisation issued a statement to welcome the recent announcement by the Registrar for political parties Mohammed Saneem that the National Federation Party (NFP), the Fiji Labour Party (FLP), and the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) will be able to operate as political parties.

The three parties have been officially registered under the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Decree and TI Fiji believes that the process is looking to including others groups in the future because of TI Fiji believes that the general elections should be a multi party affair so that ordinary Fijians can many choices of who to elect into Parliament.

Chairman Apisalome Tudreu said that TI Fiji’s submission on the draft constitution called for ensuring transparency and accountability of political financing for politicians and political parties.

It proposed the introduction of integrity pledges for parliamentarians, a clear and comprehensive code of conduct which is formulated, reviewed and monitored with the involvement of wider society.

?It suggested the regulating of parliamentary expenses and state funding of services in a parliamentarian’s own constituency, or for party interest.

TI Fiji is calling on parties which have been registered on Thursday last week and those who will be registered in the days to come to operate with integrity, be accountable to all Fijians and be transparent in their polices and implementation.

TI Fiji will work with relevant stakeholders to help educate Fijian about the elections and how they can contribute towards having a truly democratic Fiji.
