Sixty people in Nadi and Lautoka are now empowered to fight corruption in their lives and communities and report corruption after the completion of Transparency International Fiji’s Advocacy and Legal Advice Centre (ALAC) week long Workshop.

The workshops were conducted in Nadi and Lautoka from the 25 -29 November, 2013 and attended by Soqosoqo Vakamarama members, YWCA members, tenants of the Public Rental Board and some turaga-ni-koros.

The workshops were aimed at educating and empowering people to think about the negative impact of corruption and how as individuals and members of their respective communities they have a responsibility to act against corruption.

Led by Ms Davina Chan, TI Fiji’s ALAC Programme Director, the workshops in the west are conducted quarterly as part of a regular outreach programme provided by TI Fiji’s ALAC Programme to provide free legal advice and legal assistance to rural based communities.

Epeli Sukuru, Turaga ni Koro of Navuci Village, Nadi, told TI Fiji that “The workshop has broadened my knowledge on corruption and I plans to set up policies in my village to help combat corruption.

“I have learnt so much about corruption in today’s workshop. Corruption is something that is silent in our society but today it (workshop) brings in me the confidence to fight against corrupt practices,” said Sukuru.“Another thing I have learnt is to report corrupt practices as soon it happens. I have decided as the Turaga ni- Koro to go back to the village and set up some policies because I have to put a stop to corruption in my community. Secondly, I want to enforce the policies and make it as a law so that this policies are not broken and people should follow the policies,” Sukuru added.

Sukuru says more workshops and awareness campaigns should be conducted to make people understand the effects of corruption and how to stop it.

Litiana Tuidraki, who attended the workshop held at the Nadi Civil Centre said the workshop was very interesting and informative as it has enabled her to understand there is a lot that needs to be done to address corruption.“I did not know much about corruption and it was very interesting to know what corruption is and I finally came to know what corruption is and why is it important to report corruption as soon as it happens,” Tuidraki said.

Chan said “The recent MOBILE ALAC was very encouraging in that we had a lot of women participants. This is important because the misconception has been and to a certain extent still is, that women are not affected by corruption and therefore do not have a role or responsibility in combating corruption.”

Sulita Tuiqali, a representative from the Soqosoqo Vakamarama, Lautoka branch (Women’s group) said people need to change their mind set towards corruption and work hand in hand to stop corruption in their respective societies.

“I think women have to get together, people who have been through this workshop need to get together and remind each of the task to clear our societies and country from corruption,” said Tuiqali.

“Majority of the participants expressed their opinions that in order to combat corruption, parents need to play a more active role in imparting good values to their children and that religious bodies also play an important role.” Chan said.

TI Fiji’s ALAC provides free legal advice for victims and witnesses of corruption, and it assists with corruption-related complaints. Since its establishment in Fiji in 2009, ALAC has been acutely aware of the need to engage with rural communities and villages, where residents have told TI Fiji that they often do not know who to direct their questions and enquiries to.
